The word “contemplate” is derived from the Latin prefix “com,” meaning “attentive observation” and “templum,” meaning “a sacred space, such as a temple.” Contemplative meditation involves observing and reflecting in a way that is deeper and more inclusive than simply thinking about something. In this way, the mind has become a sacred space—a temple for unbiased, attentive reflection.

Jon Kabat-Zinn defines mindfulness as “the awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally, in the service of self-understanding and wisdom.”

The final part of that definition (in the service of self-understanding and wisdom) is often missed. And it’s a big miss. We meditate for reasons beyond simply being more present or reducing stress.

By combining mindfulness and contemplative meditation, we can deepen our present moment awareness, and we can also deepen our relationship with ourselves, others, and our world. We can discover greater capacity for compassion and empathy, find ways to act that align more fully with our values, and more.

During this program, we will intentionally add contemplation to our mindfulness practice to both experience and apply what Kabat-Zinn means by the final part of his definition.

For your benefit and the benefit of all participants, please ensure that you can participate fully in all 4 sessions, as well as practice contemplation daily on your own between sessions.

  • Attend and participate in all 4 sessions.
  • Practice mindfulness and contemplation formally every day between sessions.
  • Use a computer that allows all participants to be seen on one screen without having to scroll. No phones, please.

  • Forgo using distracting virtual backgrounds.

  • Keep your camera on during our sessions.

  • Be situated somewhere that provides privacy for all of us.

  • Have practice supplies nearby (mat, cushions, etc.).

  • Ensure that your computer is situated on a stable surface (instead of resting on your lap, etc.).

  • Enable the video and microphone capabilities (so that you can be seen and heard).

  • Have the current version of Zoom installed.

This program is for graduates of an 8-week mindfulness-based program (such as MBSR) that was conducted live, either in person or online.
