Maybe you love to write or you’re just curious about haiku. No writing or meditation experience is required for this program—it is open to all.

We will explore haiku as contemplative practice that can enhance clear seeing, appreciation for simplicity, brevity, connecting more deeply with nature and yourself, and expressing what is most essential.

Since haiku comes from a lived experience, we will devote ourselves to living during this program, and to noticing our lived experience. And we will write haiku. You will receive an introduction to haiku in the first session, with instruction for writing haiku. Each week you will email a sampling of your haiku to Rebecca, who will gather the group’s writing to be read, spoken, and appreciated during our sessions.

As with meditation, haiku has a particular form: this program will focus on classical haiku, which consists of—

  • a nature reference (kigo)
  • 2 parts/sections
  • the exclusion of most literary devices
As a participant, you agree to—

  • engage in haiku practice and writing both in the group and on your own
  • share your haiku with the group, and read silently and aloud the haiku of others in the group
